UCCA: Indian Center for Zen Study
UCCA has opened a modern day Zen Meditation center in Mumbai. This is probably the only place where you can study Zen Buddhism in India.
Boddhidharma, Buddha’s descendent travelled from Kerala to China on foot, where he founded Zen Buddhism. He also devised a series of physical exercises which helped his clan of monks to survive wild animals and bandits. This became the foundation of Shaolin Kung Fu. Hence Zen may be learnt with or without martial arts. Martial arts in many forms like Tai Chi, Samurai Sword philosophy or Jeet Kune Do may compliment the evolution of the mind by Zen meditation.
At UCCA Zen Buddhism center, the spirituality is developed and the mind is evolved by teaching of philosophy, contemplation, self-reflection of one’s life, group discussion, thesis/ essay compositions and public speaking with debates on various aspects of life. The process is aggressive and causes mental earthquakes as all previous beliefs are shaken, and after the mental storm comes the calm of self-realization. The result is a balanced individual who is at peace with his own self, his attributes and his deficiencies. He can then comfortably walk on in perfect harmony with his environment of work, family, friends and the vagaries of life.
